Here are the annotated slides and answers to the many questions asked from the Tuesday, August 16 presentation at the Vermillion Public Library. Thanks to all that attended. We had a good turnout and some fantastic questions. Many of the questions will be included in the annotation slides and on the frequently asked questions. Stay tuned for the updates!

Clay County Commissioners unanimously vote to move forward with a $42.8 bond election to support the construction of the new Public Safety Center. At the August 2 meeting, all five County Commissioners voted in support of a bond election for the amount of $42.8 million. The election will take place this November. The projected cost, $42.8 million, is the maximal amount that can be bonded by the County for this project. This Bond covers the entire project, including the portion expected to be paid for by the City of Vermillion (~$9.6 million).

Union County Commissioners’ raise inmate housing rate by almost 24%. It was recently announced that the daily rate for housing inmates in the Union County Jail would increase from $65 per inmate to $80 per inmate effective Jan 1 2023. This will cost Clay County nearly $100,000 more than was expected to be spent housing inmates at the Union County Jail for the coming year.

2022 Property Tax OPT OUT for paying to house inmates in area jails announced. New OPT OUT much lower than 2021 OPT OUT. At the July 12th Commissioners meeting a one year OPT OUT for totaling $250,000 was approved. The OPT OUT will appear on your tax bills in 2023. This OPT OUT replaces the one year OPT OUT approved last year for $725,000 currently included in this year’s property tax payment.
